Utah's Local Solution to Our National Problem

Utahns and other Americans talk about term limits and the need to "throw the bums out" but they almost never follow through by actually doing anything except complain.

There is a truism in American politics that "those who show up make the decisions."  There is another truism that "all politics is local".   That simply means that those who care enough to participate at the grassroots level posess the power that elects every candidate in every national and local office.

In America, most conservative, constitutionally grounded, God fearing citizens are just NOT showing up.  That's the root of these awful developments that are keeping us all up at night.

In Utah and most states, when citizens with a common purpose focus their energy on the "point of maximum impact", changes can be made.  Throughout America, that nexus of power is at the precinct caucus meetings and the conventions of each state's dominant party.  In Utah that is the Republican party.

While we were sleeping, that fundamental concept propelled a community organizer to the White House in just a few short years.  Conservative Americans can use precisely the same game plan.  Up until now they have preferred watching from the sidelines.

In Utah we have an electoral system that allows those few citizens who care the most to have a disproportionately powerful voice in selecting candidates to represent  the political parties.

Utah is divided up into roughly 1,600 neighborhood precincts.  When a group of neighbors in that precinct meet together it is called a caucus. In this neighborhood caucus meeting they elect officers and Delegate representatives.  Those chosen as Delegates from each of the neighborhood precincts convene anually in conventions to choose the party nominees for state and county political offices.  Statewide there are roughly 3,200 Delegates to the State Republican Political Convention.

Convention

At a convention, if a candidate in a given race gets 60% of the delegate vote, that candidate wins the party nomination at the convention.  If a contest does not have a clear winner who achieves 60% of the vote, the two highest vote getters square off in a primary election.  Primary elections are expensive and incumbant career politicians almost always wins by using the massive war chest they have accumulated from the special interest organizations to whom they have pledged their alligience.

Primary elections can be avoided if a group of individuals with a common purpose focus their energy at this point of maximum impact.

Do the math and you find that roughly 1,900 individuals will choose Utah's next U.S. Senator, Governor, U.S. Congressman, etc.

Consider this perspective.  There are over 1.7 million registered voters in Utah.  There are over 500,000 registered Republicans. There are over 60,000 at an average BYU football game and over 20,000 at a Jazz game.

For Utah's 2.5 million people, those 1,900 who have the character to show up will make the choices.

If those 1,900 people act with the same common purpose, to elect only the candidates who are the most committed to constitutional principles, every candidate and principle they support will win every contest at the conventions.

That is the essence of the Utah Grassroots Alliance, to build and educated and committed foundationof Utahns to propel constitutionally committed candidates into every elected office for the purpose of challenging the unconstitutional actions of the federal government and refounding America.
